And all this he did, for the sole purpose of bringing this people into subjection or into bondage. And behold, we at this time do pay tribute to the king of the Lamanites, to the amount of one half [...]

The Tree of Life—Individual and Communal

Posted by Connor on September 27th, 2006

(Cross posted at the Book of Mormon symposium at Straight and Narrow)
The Tree of Life is a symbol familiar to all who have read the Book of Mormon. Nephi learned from an angel that the tree in his father’s vision represents the love of God. The vision shows a tree bearing white fruit, [...]

Church’s Opposition to Draft in 1945

Posted by Connor on September 27th, 2006

With the new legislation (track on GovTrack) popping out of the woodwork on “national service” (i.e. a draft), we tend to hear people scrutinizing our patriotism by our willingness to adopt such a policy. “Don’t you support defending your country?”, they say.
The draft is and always has been a bad idea. [...]

The Way of the Covenant

Posted by Connor on September 23rd, 2006

We, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Lattery-day Saints, are a covenant-making people. In the October 2006 Ensign, Elder Holland stated “This way we each have chosen, the way along which our Savior assists us, is the way of the covenant.
The Oxford Dictionary defines “covenant” as “an agreement that brings about a [...]

Posted by Connor on September 22nd, 2006

That’s right, Sustain’d is a go! It is officially launched as of this morning, off on its journey to find a life of its own. Sustain’d is what you make of it. I hope it becomes a good resource for the online LDS community to find, promote, and access good, interesting LDS [...]

Ha! Those of you who thought I was a nerd (especially after watching the White and Nerdy vid) were all wrong! I even classified myself as a nerd for a long time, but I guess I was mistaken.
Here are my results from the Nerd, Geek, or Dork test:

Veto the Voting Machines

Posted by Connor on September 20th, 2006

As the elections draw near, voters should be made aware of the ongoing controversy regarding the Diebold Election Systems. These computers allow for electronic voting, but have been shown numerous times to be insecure and susceptible to hacking. One such example of hacking the machines to sway the outcome of the votes was [...]

Mothers Without Borders Service Project in Conclusion

Posted by Connor on September 18th, 2006

Last month I posted about a service project our ward was doing to assemble hygiene kits to be sent to Zambia, Africa.
We raised almost $3,000 and purchased the supplies for the kits from Mandalay International. The kits ended up costing about $3 a pop. Tonight during Family Home Evening we assembled [...]

Constitution Day, Bush-Style

Posted by Connor on September 18th, 2006

Dang! It slipped my mind that yesterday was Constitution Day! I was hoping to plan some festivities and make a big thing out if it. Jim Bovard offered three great suggestions for how to celebrate such a day in “this Age of Bush” (I’ll try to remember these for next year):

Wiretap your [...]

The FED goes after the Liberty Dollar

Posted by Connor on September 18th, 2006

The USA Today ran a story last week about the Federal Reserve going after the Liberty Dollar, not wanting consumers to be “fooled”. The John Birch Society has a great article about the issue which I wholeheartedly agree with. I plan to buy some myself.

Worship the Father or Jesus?

Posted by Connor on September 16th, 2006

Do members of the LDS church worship Heavenly Father or Jesus Christ?
There are numerous scriptures explaining that we worship the Father while believing in Christ:
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. (John 4:23)
