The Abinadi Effect

Posted by Connor on October 24th, 2006

Abinadi is one of my favorite prophets in the Book of Mormon. This morning I was reading in Mosiah where he’s standing in King Noah’s court, rebuking them for not teaching the true meaning of and reason for [...]

November Surprise

Posted by Connor on October 23rd, 2006

Still unsure as to how to vote during the upcoming election? Well, it would seem that the GOP, in a last-ditch maneuver to retain power, is delaying their October Surprise until November. November 5th, be to exact.
Sadaam is evidently to be sentenced just two days before the midterm elections.

A Prophetic Warning

Posted by Connor on October 23rd, 2006

I find it interesting when people claim that there must no longer be a threat of secret combinations, conspiracy, and government corruption. The argument these people put forward is that modern prophets have been silent on this issue, whereas in the days of Presidents McKay and Benson these things were broadly discussed and made [...]

An Answer to Prayer

Posted by Connor on October 22nd, 2006

Recent events in the life of a friend caused me to ponder today about God’s timing and my prayers. I’ve been praying lately for something to happen around a certain time for this friend’s benefit. When today it became apparent that my prayer will most likely not be answered during the time I [...]

Orrin Hatch Billboards

Posted by Connor on October 21st, 2006

If you commute on I-15 in Utah you’ve no doubt seen some of Orrin Hatch’s new billboards. They feature a picture of the Senator with a watered-down definition or two of four words that allegedly represent Hatch: clout, heart, gutsy, and bold.
As soon as I saw the first one, I rolled my eyes [...]

Deluged with Debt

Posted by Connor on October 21st, 2006

The JBS recently commented on the Dow hitting 12,000:
The value of the dollar continues to decline. The major reason? More of them are being produced to pay for government programs. This is the way inflation ought to be explained. Referring to inflation as rising prices, the usual blather, is akin to [...]

Stephen R. Covey Lecture 2

Posted by Connor on October 20th, 2006

Tonight I attended a fireside with Stephen R. Covey as the guest speaker. Some of the material he covered tonight I heard in January when I attended another lecture of his (I’ve posted the notes of that lecture here). The following are the notes I took tonight:
Title of lecture: Zion in the Midst [...]

World’s Best Father

Posted by Connor on October 20th, 2006

This made me cry. If you don’t cry, there’s something wrong with you. The story below was published in Sports Illustrated on June 20, 2005, p. 88. Be sure to watch the video at the end.
I try to be a good father. Give my kids mulligans. Work nights to pay [...]

The Kingdom of Heaven and the New World Order

Posted by Connor on October 19th, 2006

For the student of revealed scripture it is not difficult to understand how Satan attempts to counterfeit symbols, rituals, institutions, and decrees given by God. The same holds true for the Kingdom of Heaven, a theocratically governed political institution with God as the King.
The D&C Institute manual for D&C 38:21–22 says the following:
Though Jesus [...]

Vote Republican to Keep Mr. Jones Away!

Posted by Connor on October 19th, 2006

So I just finished Animal Farm this morning. What a great book. The intriguing part is that it was written about Stalinist Russia, yet as I read it I drew countless parallels to our current administration and political situation.
In the book, Mr. Jones (a human) runs the farm. The animals revolt, kicking [...]

Your Words are Lies, Sir

Posted by Connor on October 19th, 2006

…on this first full day that the Military Commissions Act is in force, we now face what our ancestors faced, at other times of exaggerated crisis and melodramatic fear-mongering:
A government more dangerous to our liberty, than is the enemy it claims to protect us from.
Do yourself a favor and set aside nine minutes to watch [...]

To Chasten is To Love

Posted by Connor on October 18th, 2006

I’ve always been intrigued by Helaman 12:3:
And thus we see that except the Lord doth chasten his people with many afflictions, yea, except he doth visit them with death and with terror, and with famine and with all manner of pestilence, they will not remember him.
How many times do we read the word “remember” in [...]
