Cognate Accusatives

Posted by Connor on November 24th, 2006

A couple of weeks ago I noticed in the scriptures something I had learned from a Hugh Nibley article a few years back: cognate accusatives. They are a literary element found in Hebrew, also making an extensive appearance in the Book of Mormon.

The Shopocalypse

Posted by Connor on November 24th, 2006

By Common Consent has a post about the Shopocalypse, or as it’s commonly called, “Black Friday”.
This day often garners more attention than the holidays it eclipses, Thanksgiving and Christmas. People wait in anticipation for a massive frenzy of sales, long lines, discounts, and freebies for the early birds.
Materialistic consumerism at its finest. [...]

Nationalized Thanksgiving

Posted by Connor on November 23rd, 2006

There are two proclamations worth reading on this great day. The first is the following by President George Washington, one of the greatest men I’ve studied, where he recommended a specific day for the nation to give thanks to God for our many blessings.

Thanksgiving During War

Posted by Connor on November 23rd, 2006

Curtis wrote a blog post which causes serious reflection during this time of the year when we’re supposed to show gratitude for our bounteous blessings:
Do we feel thankful this thanksgiving that we live in the USA where we are free to live without being bombed and killed? Do we feel thankful that we live [...]

Has the Military Lost its Humanity?

Posted by Connor on November 22nd, 2006

Anybody who believes the mainstream media and the Bush administration when they try to convince us that they don’t torture detainees needs to wake up.
The Deseret News posted an article today from Dr. Brian Moench about Alyssa Peterson, an LDS RM who worked in the “cage” for a couple days, being forced to [...]

Christmahanukwanzadan and Consumerism

Posted by Connor on November 22nd, 2006

The Rocky Mountain News has an article titled “Christmas’ Return to Stores” which talks about Wal-Mart, Target, and other leading retail chains returning to a “Merry Christmas” branding during the holiday season.
After an uproar in recent years from Christian Consumers, several retail chains have felt the push and decided to return to [...]

Wally is Back

Posted by Connor on November 21st, 2006

Looks like my boycott of Wal-Mart can come to a quasi-close.
In what may seem as an immediate response to AFA’s calls for a boycott during after-Thanksgiving sales, Wal-Mart has just issued the following release:
Wal-Mart will not make corporate contributions to support or oppose highly controversial issues unless they directly relate to our ability [...]

Division in the Church

Posted by Connor on November 21st, 2006

The following is a portion of a talk by Ezra Taft Benson, found in the April 1969 Conference Report, pp. 10-12
“Sometimes we hear someone refer to a division in the Church. In reality, the Church is not divided. It simply means that there are some who, for the time being at least, are members of [...]

Political Blogging as Hate Crime

Posted by Connor on November 21st, 2006

This website has a post concerning the Democrats and an anti-”hate speech” bill that may soon be a topic of legislation when the new Demo-controlled Congress takes action.
If Rev. Ted Pike is correct, this blog may soon be illegal.
“For the past eight years, the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith has tried unsuccessfully to pass its [...]

The Parable of Gomer

Posted by Connor on November 20th, 2006

These are the generations of Gomer, son of Homer, son of Omer. And in the days of Gomer, Noah, the Prophet, went unto the people saying, “Prepare ye for the flood which is to come, yea, build yourselves a boat, that ye may not perish.”
Now, Gomer was a member of the Church, and taught [...]

Priorities

Posted by Connor on November 19th, 2006

Thousands of Americans with messed up priorities spent hours (if not days) in line, fighting for a chance to spend $600 on an entertainment system, the Playstation 3.
$600 could feed a family in Africa for a year.
The following video, aired on MSNBC, disturbs me. Greedy Americans who are fighting over an entertainment system need [...]

Hatch Asks Nation to Fast

Posted by Connor on November 18th, 2006

Senator Hatch introduced a resolution to the Senate which passed, designating November 16th as “Feed America” day. The resolution calls for citizens to fast two meals on the 16th (one week before Thanksgiving) and donate the money they would have spent on the meals to a religious or charitable organzation.
