Many of the ancient Israelites believed she was Yahweh's companion and for several years she was even symbolized in the Israelite temple. In the later priestly cleansing of the temple she was removed because she had become a symbol of worship (along with other sacred items which had become idolatrous; I believe Aaron's staff was also removed). Dan Peterson has written an excellent paper comparing Nephi's vision of the tree of life as a representation of Asherah. I believe it's called "Nephi's Asherah". Asherah was a fertility goddess.
