Comments on: Chaffetz v. Spencer: Round 1

This reminds me of when I went to a breakfast meeting for Republican state delegates with David Leavitt (former Republican Congressional candidate defeated by Chaffetz). The floor was opened for questions, and the first gentleman who could ask a question said, “If you are elected Congressman, what will you do for Juab County?” I was flabberghasted. First of all, Congress should’t be doing anything for Juab County directly, should they? Second, it illustrated to me why our country has come so far towards socialism—it’s the “what’s in it for me” mentality. We so love to be taken care of! And third, I may be blowing it out of proportion, but it appears to be evidence of a lack of understanding among the general public as to what the real issues are, and what kind of peril we are in.

And for Curtis—you didn’t say whether you agreed with the U.N. or not, but if you haven’t ever read the United Nations Charter (constitution), you should. It is pure communism. And we’re taking orders from them…..

Thanks, Connor for keeping me informed and for being involved. Your questions to the candidates were excellent. Too bad the moderator didn’t ask all of them.

Congrats for putting a little scary context into something like a political race. They won’t let you do that again; it distracts from the soundbites. Now to get you or someone like you on the program for the presidential debates. . . perhaps with Ron Paul* as moderator?

*I suggest Ron Paul because he also has a penchant for injecting scary context and meaning into politics. Admittedly the questions are loaded, but we’d see some awesome debates and it’s impossible for reasonable people not to ask such questions in this day and age.

Health care is indeed listed as a right by the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, of which the USA is a signator to, and indeed was written by Eleanor Roosevelt if I’m not mistaken.

As Chaffetz himself said this morning – the foreign and domestic issues are all tied together. A candidate who is wrong on one side will have a hard time being right on the other side. I think your analysis is right on. Chaffetz articulates the right positions generally on the domestic issues, but he sounds likely to follow our current misguided direction on “strong defense.” As he was saying this morning that he could not see any way to cut our defense budget, the first reaction in my brain was “Do we really know that our defense budget is being well spent? If not then we need to get more for our money and/or reduce our spending in that area.”

I wondered about how many questions were submitted because two of mine were used. I submitted the “health care as a right” question and the one asking the candidates to “define excess profits”.

I agree that Spencer’s answer on the health care as a right was troubling.

I am excite about Chaffetz, as you can tell from my blog. He is the best true conservative that the Utah Republicans have offered since my interest in politics and the Party. I am very excited to see him in this race. Thanks for your generally positive comments.
