Josh makes a good point. Doing the research for our own relatives makes it much more personal. You learn the history and the stories, you can get to know the actual people behind the names. In fact, it is through these efforts that other experiences are gained as well.

At first I started doing sealings because it seemed easier then the endowments. But then I got a feeling about it.

I would close my eyes an imagine the families gathered there in the sealing room. That brought a ton of joy to my heart!

I don't know that I've ever been bothered by not being a witness to service - and most of the time, it's local and so I can see it face to face. I might also compain now and them, but by the end of the day - my outlook has changed and I can understand how the pure love of Christ works through us all!

I've learned more about since I got married, my wife's family is nothing but service oriented. It's wonderful!

After writing this post, I recalled the scripture in the book of Mosiah where King Benjamin talks about service:

For how knoweth a man the master whom he has not served, and who is a stranger unto him, and is far from the thoughts and intents of his heart? Mosiah 5:13

I think this illustrates what true service is all about: individual ministry, where we know the person/people we are serving. It's so much more meaningful when you can see the impact you've made, and the progress of the person you've had the privilege of helping.

Connor,

I've felt this way many times and I believe this is even more reason to focus our efforts on our own family history. Taking your own family names through the temple has so much more meaning. I hope with the release of new FamilySearch throughout the world people will begin to realize the importance of doing the work for our ancestors.
