Today I attended a lecture on the BYU campus by Stephen R. Covey. The following are my notes I took.

Golden years?!? “Live life in crescendo!”

Pointed at me for not knowing which way north is… :(

Have your life strategy in harmony with your spiritual DNA
Cultural DNA overlays spiritual DNA and drives values
Values drive behavior. Principles drive consequences of our behavior.

“Social Mirror” - what others think of you (most people act based on this).

The role of Israel is (moral and spiritual) leadership. That is the divine definition of yourself.

3 unique gifts that God has given each of us:

  1. The power of choice
  2. Principles that are natural laws (universal, timeless, self-evident)
  3. Four unique intelligences
    1. IQ - Mental (to learn)
    2. PQ - Physical/Economic (to live)
    3. EQ - Emotional/Social (to love)
    4. SQ - Spirit (to leave a legacy)

Let us develop peace of conscience (which instills courage)

Have moral authority - greatly different from formal (appointed) authority

“He who cannot change the very fabric of his thought will never be able to change reality, and will never, therefore, make any progress.” - Anwar Sadat

Trim Tab - the small rudder that turns the big rudder that turns a ship.
Small changes can have a big impact.
It starts with identifying a need and then doing something about it.

Write a personal mission statement (based on gospel criteria)

There are two ways to bridge the conscious and subconscious mind.

  1. Writing
  2. Visualizing

These two will gradually replace “social software” and will become part of the way you think and see everything in life.

“Every salient truth which comes so forcibly to the heart and mind of man is but an awakening of the memories of the Spirit.” - Joseph F. Smith

U.S. Constitution - institutionalized moral authority

If you want to break some habits from your family of original, be a transitional figure, a cycle breaker, a change catalyst.
D&C 99 - repent of sins of ancestors (consequences of their sins)

Enthusiasm - “God (theo) in you”
Holy Ghost works through conscience
Over 90%of commandments in Book of Mormon were personal - given through the Holy Ghost to a person.
Give us this day our daily bread - Christ said “I am the bread of life”
Strengthen conscience through daily scripture study

“All children are born geniuses; 9,999 out of every 10,000 are swiftly, inadvertently degeniusized by grownups.” -Buckminster Fuller

Essence of communication is LISTENING. (We have two ears, and one mouth.. use that ratio)

Talking stick (Iroquois Federation taught it to the Founding Fathers)

“Would you be willing to search for a solution that is better than what either one of you (us) have proposed?” (Habits 4, 6)

“Would you agree to a simple ground rule: no one can make his or her point until they have restated the other person’s point to his or her satisfaction.” (Habit 5)

We don’t see the world as it is; we see the world as we are.

Accountability - count. Quantify the goals.

Being valiant in the testimony of Jesus usually is interpreted to mean being true to him. His testimony is about you. You are precious beyond comparison. You are God’s own child. He is your advocate and your mediator. He loves you beyond any comprehension, in spite of your weaknesses and sins.

Do not compare yourself. Stay on your divine path.

Great scholar, Stephen R. Covey.

Enjoyed 7 Habits and the First Things First most.

Not much breakthrough from the 8TH Habit.

Hope he can have some breakthrough ideas soon that can help change our paradigms…
