Some dude named Upton Sinclair has said “The private control of credit is the modern form of slavery.” Amen to that. Long have the modern-day prophets and apostles warned against debt. President J. Reuben Clark said ““Once in debt, interest is your companion every minute of the day and night; you cannot shun it or slip away from it; you cannot dismiss it; it yields neither to entreaties, demands, or orders; and whenever you get in its way or cross its course or fail to meet its demands, it crushes you”.

So why do I mention this now? Well seeing as how I am “financially independent”, that means I pay for all my stuff. Rent. Books. Cell phone. Car loan. Gas. Car insurance. Food. Dates (if you read my earlier blog, you’ll know that this fund has been a big stagnant of late). Taxes and Tithing (duh). Deodorant. Toenail clippers. Nose hair trimmer.

I have a good job, so there’s not too much to worry about. But I do depend on my trusty credit card (or as Billy Madison would say, “Momma says credit cards are da devil!”) from time to time. So I just called Wells Fargo and tried to get them to double my credit limit. I was denied (and I have good credit too, what’s up with that?) the amount I requested and they “compromised” on an amount near the middle.

I don’t know why I even bothered getting an increase on my credit. With a smaller limit I would be more restrained and less likely to go nuts with my credit card. Unlike some of the kids around here (or 99% if you live in Belmont) I pay off my own credit card, so I’m just digging myself into a hole.

The one thing I do have to note is that tithing is amazing. It’s a wonder how I can give up 10% of all “my” money and somehow find other sources of income that help me pay the bills and have enough spending cash to be comfortable. Perhaps it is a good thing that I’m not dating–then I’d be in even more debt. (cue Billy Madison - “Momma says girls are da devil!”).
